Guillotine

While writing "Guillotine," I wanted to dramatize my pain which made me hit writer's block fast. It's easy enough to make a sad song but I didn't want to make something that was necessarily "relatable." The lyrical content of the song is pretty specific. What I really wanted to foster was empathy, to make someone think "that could be me." I think that's part of the magic most of Lorde's tracks; they're super specific yet entirely engaging. I'm not exactly Lorde though, so I don't think I could ever draw in an audience like she does. Personally, I remember reading the headline "Kate Moss shoveled up cocaine and vodka — her friends nicknamed her THE TANK'" in a tabloid online while looking up photos of her and that's kind of when it clicked that it was possible to sponsor empathy for this person that neither I, nor the listener, really knew.

Empathy is typically understood as inherently sponsored by few degrees of separation between its exhibitors. It is common to feel empathy for a friend or a family member or even an acquaintance. "Guillotine" takes empathy beyond this interpersonal realm and puts it behind the lamination of tabloids. Sharing emotional common space with Kate Moss is in every bit idolization as it is self-realization. Understanding your own emotions through those of others is a large part of the human experience, and celebrities are no exception to this rule.

Heartbreaker - Nik Kos

Wasted
Kate Moss in the making
CK in the basement
Calvin Klein on your waistband

Lie about my weekends
To your friends' apartments
Pretend that you want me
Just pretending that I'm wanted

Don't like me when I'm sober
You still don't when I'm faded
Only reason I'm still here is just for decoration
So you can talk me up to all your it girls and socialite friends, yeah
All those it girls you hate but you pretend

You start war under covers
High on bloodlust and uppers
I know all you want is to shake off the summer
I'm up late at night wondering if we're still lovers
Or if you'll cut me free
Guillotine

Gorgeous
Feel like I am drop dead
Feel like I could drop dead
Built up like a fortress on the ski slopes with an Olsen
Reckless abandon

You need space, I get that
You save face, I get mad
We both know this won't last
That's okay, that's fine by me
I'm a problem and that's fine by me

You start war under covers
High on bloodlust and uppers
I know all you want is to shake off the summer
I'm up late at night wondering if we're still lovers
Or if you'll cut me free
Guillotine
