happiness

happiness

flies in on the wings of a hummingbird

it drips like sweet honey down your chin

and salty tears down your cheeks.

happiness

comes through when you meet a new friend

on accident, by fate,

and curiosity takes you through

a new person’s quirky personality.

happiness

flows through your veins

when your heartbeat picks up

skips a beat

trips over itself

and flies out the window

when he kisses you for the first time.

happiness

is your mother’s voice on the phone

her laugh, her support

your father’s joking tone

your brothers newfound baritone voice

and the occasional facetime with your dog.

happiness

is the warm

small

and even sweaty hands

that you left back home

to keep you safe

hold you tight

and certainly love you forever.

happiness

is fulfillment

in a growing soul

and happiness is never momentary.

it is a quiet, constant hum

that keeps me alive.
