Recently we were able to get in touch with emerging West Coast musician CAT to talk about her new single Strawberry Milkshake which releases to the public today. This song is an upbeat ballad with an infectious beat and lyrics encouraging the listener to seize the day, take what they deserve, and realize their own worth. It is the perfect song to help us all finish off the summer and move into the new season ready to recognize that we are all, as CAT puts it, “the cherry on top.”
Make sure to give it a listen below!
How long have you been making music?
This week marks my one year of making music and sharing it with others, but I have been writing lyrics and making music since I was seven.
Have you always wanted to make music?
I have! I’ve always wanted to be a musician. When I was in grade school I remember telling people I wanted to be a veterinarian as a coverup.
What would you call your style of music?
I call my music Art Pop. I identify with different styles and experiment with layering different sounds of pop.
Who would you say inspires your style?
Prince is my forever fashion icon. I get inspired by different music cultures as well. A lot of my style comes from studying Glam Rock, Disco, Punk, and Pop fashion.
What kind of music did you grow up listening to?
We were a strong Green Day household. I grew up with a nice mix of The Ramones and David Bowie as well as the formative pre-teen trilogy: Britney Spears, Hilary Duff, and Hannah Montana.
Do you play the instruments in the back? (If not, do you work with a band and what is that like? or Do you play any instruments?)
I write most of my songs on my keyboard! My song recording processes start with me sharing awkward voice memos and then collaborating with my producer, Alex Flagstad, who is brilliant.
Tell us a little bit about "Strawberry Milkshake." Is there a story behind it?
Strawberry Milkshake is about who I was when I was sixteen and where I was in my life: I was in a relationship that wasn’t right for me, living in my hometown with a fresh driver's license and the need for speed down winding roads. I was in the car with my boyfriend at the time and we were driving in awkward silence. I wasn’t happy and knew that I deserved to be. Strawberry Milkshake is about freeing yourself, getting what you deserve, and drinking milkshakes.
What else have you been working on leading up to this release?
There will be a lyric music video that will be coming out in the next month as well as another song in the works! All very exciting things. I’m also in my senior year at the University of Southern California, so… a lot of homework, as well.
If you could hang out with 3 musicians dead or alive who would they be?
A GREAT question. Prince, Danny Elfman, and Charli XCX for sure.
